Welcome to the world of Roleplaying...
If you're reading this then you are interested in Role Playing. The following rules and guidelines are not to discourage but to encourage those who are interesting in this fun form of writing and storytelling. We also have tips to help those who are new to Role Playing.
1. What is Role Playing or RP?
It is a form of storytelling but you will be writing with others as the story is fleshed out. You create characters with a personality and a history. Then you take him/her on adventures with other role playing characters. The fun part of role playing is you never know where the story will lead you!
2. What is OOC?
'OOC' stands for 'Out of Character'. For every story that is created...an OOC thread will be created. This is where we post when we have a question or just to make comments about the story. We don't want to disrupt the flow of the storytelling by posting OOC's within the storyline.
3. How to create a character
Let your imagination run with this! I find this part of Role playing the most interesting. It's fun to come up with names for our characters and there's alway a history behind their adventurous lives.
There is a special thread dedicated for the posting of characters only and what stories they are being written in. We ask that you stick with Tolkienish names. I will provide a website for those who don't have Tolkien's language books. This can help in creating a name(s). Plenty of Prefixes and Suffixes to mix and match. Or you can create a name from your own imagination...but just make sure it has a Middle-earth theme to it.
4. How do I join an RP story?
Now that you have created your character and their history it's time to start the adventure! Before jumping in head and feet first..always read the OOC at the beginning of an RP story. There may be special circumstances listed or restrictions. Then ask if you may join. This is not because you may be denied to join...it is just to show courtesy. This way there is not this 'all of a sudden' wild post coming out of no where from 'who is this person'? LOL
5. Rules in Role Playing
* Treat others with respect
* Please use proper spelling, grammar and punctuation. This can greatly diminish a story's works when we don't follow the rules of grammar, etc.
* Stories are Tolkien based. No other form of writing outside of Middle-earth allowed. And because role playing can be fun...we've created another board dedicated to role playing outside of Middle-earth...such as from the books of Narnia, or any other fantasy based work of your liking.
* No one liners. This does not advance the players nor help in continuing the story. A one liner can be one or two sentences. If you can only muster up one paragraph...well, that's better than a one liner. One liners can be annoying. Especially to those who take this role playing business serious, lol. But fun!
* Don't be afraid to carry the story and advance another player's character(s). If you're not sure about someone's character... ask in the OOC thread or email them and ask what it is you would like to do. And whatever you do...DON'T kill off another players character unless given permission. Quite harrowing to see this happen. And it has happened!
* Posts should be thought out before written. Many role players have the HOME collection (History of Middle-earth), The Silmarillion, Maps and Middle-earth guide books to assist them in writing. It's important to keep within the boundaries of Tolkien's work. This by no means limits the imagination! It's just we don't want to write something that's not consistent with Middle-earth. There are wizards...but no wicked witches. Well...may be a wicked sorceress.
* We know how busy life can be. So don't worry if your gone for a few weeks or so. There is always someone who is willing to carry your character for a bit until you get back. But if you find that you will be gone for longer then two or three weeks...it's always best to write yourself out. Once you return...you can always write yourself back in.
* Please keep your posts sensible, legible, organized, and clean. We are a family forum. No crude language is necessary to tell a story. It can be done without such language.
* Do not do anything that affects another's character without their permission. This is just common courtesy.
* No out in left field posts. Like for instance: 'Sauron was my brother from another creation' or 'Morgoth was really my sister pretending to be a Valar when really she was a Mirkwood what-a-be elf'. I mean...really...this has happened. Not in those examples though. But close enough.
If you have any problems or questions...please email me either at this forum as a private message or use my email: parador_j@yahoo.com
This place is to have fun and to use our creative imaginations in writing an adventurous story together. Don't let any of this intimidate you...where you feel like you are not a good enough writer to participate. By no means are any of us great prolific writers. We just have this passion and inspiration to write...all because of our love for Tolkien's works and the man himself. I'm glad I rose to the challenge. And have been greatly rewarded by my experiences in RPing.
Just thinking about it and having participated in RPs I find it incredible what people can come up with and the bond in friendships formed along the way.
So... come in and join us...and most of all....just have fun!
